My main research interest concerns the sedimentology, physical-stratigraphy, palaeoceanography and palaeoecology of Neogene Mediterranean deposits, with particular attention to the problems related to the Messinian Salinity Crisis, the climatic control on high frequency cyclicity of siciliclastic sedimentary successions and to the relationships between tectonics and sedimentation in syn-orogenic basins. Within the Evaporite Geology Group we are also exploring life in extreme environments, the role of microbial communities in mineral and rock formation as well as biogeochemical processes.
