The Sulfur genesis: a new contribution by studying the Messinian evaporitic deposits
The aim of my thesis project is to provide a contribution in understanding the genesis of sedimentary sulphur deposits which involved hydrocarbons and evaporitic rocks generated during the geological event called Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC). Fieldwork surveys, geochemical and petrographic laboratory analysis together with computer modelling are the methods necessary for this purpose. Eastern Romagna (Northern Apennines), Caltanissetta (Sicily) and Lorca (Southern Spain) basins have been chosen as study areas. Final implications of the whole project would be a contribution in understanding the geological events which lead to sulphur formation and to furnish a new method for oil exploration using sulphur as a marker of hydrocarbons migration. Moreover, this study would help in understanding how climatic changes can affect environmental conditions in the perspective of similar future events.
