Descrizione del progetto

BILATERAL PROJECT OF GREAT RELEVANCE ITALY-USA 2016/17

PROGETTO DI GRANDE RILEVANZA ITALIA-USA 2016/17

following the Joint Declaration of Scientific and Technological Coorperation between Italy and the United States of America for the years 2016-2017

This bilateral project aims at strengthen the scientific collaboration between the University of Parma and the University of Michigan in the field of innovative magnetic materials as chemical sensors for gases and vapours. The materials will be based on Metallacrowns, a class of molecules discovered by the partner in the USA and largely studied in Italy, which exhibit single-molecule magnetic behavior. In this project we will carry out collaborative research taking advantage of our complementary expertise. Possibly more important, this bilateral project will add a great value to the training of young researchers, to the education and scientific relationship between the two institutions, and more in general to the potentiation of competitiveness in the international scientific scenario of the two collaborating laboratories.
Recently, porous metallacrowns were isolated in our laboratory in Italy: within this project, we will devise new porous metallacrowns capable to change their magnetic properties upon absorption of guest molecules. Our two research groups are leaders in the study of this type of compounds, as showed by co-authoring of scientific papers and presentations to conferences. Through this bilateral project, we aim to maintain at the highest level our collaborative research, and to support the mobility of early stage researcher, allowing them to carry out innovative research in our laboratories.

This project takes part in the multilateral European research programme Marie Curie IRSES "METALLACROWNS - Metallacrowns-based innovative materials and supramolecular devices" funded under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union (https://sites.google.com/site/metallacrowns), into which both the partners of this bilateral are involved. In particular, this bilateral will synergistically support the activities of work package 6 of the Marie Curie project (Magnetic Metallacrown-based materials).

This project has received funding by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).
